Ice compression after an ankle sprain

A swollen ankle needs the right assessment, not just ice. If you cannot put weight on it, get medical advice before starting a home routine.

What do the grades mean?

Grade 1 is a mild stretch with small ligament tears. Grade 2 is a partial tear. Grade 3 is a complete tear and may leave the joint unstable. A clinician must assess the injury; swelling alone cannot tell you the grade.

The ankle cuff

The ankle cuff is L-shaped and fits around the foot and ankle. Tell us the area you need so we can confirm the cuff. Keep it snug, not tight, and follow the supplied fitting instructions.

In the early days

Cold therapy may help with pain and swelling early after a sprain. Follow your clinician's timing and settings. Rest with the ankle supported; elevation above heart level can help swelling. Follow advice about walking and gentle movement.

When to get checked

Seek medical assessment if you cannot bear weight, have severe pain, or your symptoms worsen. A foot that becomes cold, pale, blue or newly numb needs prompt medical attention. Stop cold compression if it burns or changes your skin.
